Brooklyn Bridge Completed in 1883, the Brooklyn bridge became the largest suspension brifge and the first to be made of steel. The bridge, built by John A. Roebling, took 16 years to buil, required 600 workers and claimed over 20 lives, including Roebling's. Most died of caisson disease after coming up from the underwater excavation chambers. The bridge linked Manhattan and Brooklyn, then two separate cities.
