Here you can read all about the schools that we have worked with and who have great gardens and/or compost projects. If you want to add your own school story please contact us.

Burlescombe Primary

Burlescombe School have a fantastic garden that is managed with the help of 3 dedicated parents. This year they grew

  • courgettes and round marrows
  • corn
  • strawberries
  • tomatoes

and they were trying out a tomatillo, which is a perennial plant which produces tomato-like fruit encased in a thick, papery husk. The plant comes from Central America originally.

Edible Gardens in Schools helped them to build a 3 bin compost system to compost all the waste from the garden and the left overs from the fruit at break time.

Landscove Primary

EGS worked with Landscove to build 2 L-shaped raised beds. This year they grew a good crop of marrows, pumpkins, and tomatoes. They planned to make a ratatouille dish for their harvest festival. They have used the garden as a resource for teaching Life Cycles - looking at fruits and seeds and seed dispersal.

The school decided to opt out of Devon County school meals this year and have food produced by Riverford Organic Farm instead. About 90% of the fruit and vegetables will be organic and more than 60% of the meat will be local, and free range. They hope the garden will start providing some extra food for them as well!

Yeo Valley Primary

Raised bed gardens were built at Yeo Valley primary school in Barnstaple in November 2005. Yeo Valley school is part of the Food for Thought programme which links schools in Devon to schools in Uganda, to share experiences and information about sustainable farming and growing. All schools in Devon and Uganda who are part of the programme have vegetable gardens. Teachers from the schools involved go on exchange visits to the schools in Uganda and vice versa.

Dartington Primary - Brimhay Nursery

Pupils from the nursery in Dartington worked really hard to build compost bins next to their vegetable garden. They are going to recycle fruit scraps and paper towels. Dartington nursery not only has a lovely vegetable garden and a great apple tree but also has a fantastic sensory garden which is growing lots of lovely smelling herbs, and other plants like lambs ear which is all soft and hairy - like a lamb's ear!
