Permaculture is a practical design system for sustainable living.  It stresses working with nature and helps you identify steps for positive change for yourself, your family and your community.  It is ethical, creative and inspiring and gives a blueprint for our survival and the repair of this degraded planet!

Course syllabus


Aims:
Learners will gain:
- a greater understanding of the ethics, attitudes and principles used in permaculture design for sustainable living and community development
- some practical experience of applying your new skills and understanding
- an idea of how to apply these in your own life
- an idea of where to go for further information

Content:
- The ethics and attitudes of permaculture
- The guiding principles of permaculture design
- Observation skills
- Simple mapping techniques
- Inspiring case studies
- A design exercise, working with nature not against it

Teaching/learning methods to be used:
This is a ‘blended learning’ course. It consists of two days face-to-face over two months with 18 hours online.
The course is informal, based indoors with practical outdoor sessions to back up the theory.  There are taught sessions, plenary discussions and work in small groups. Time and value are given to learners’ personal experiences and skills.  The programme is inclusive of a wide variety of learning styles.

Requirements (prior knowledge, prior qualifications, prior experience, reading etc):
No prior knowledge needed.  Internet access and basic IT skills required for the on-line part of the course.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, you will be able to:

- Show an understanding of the ethics and principles of permaculture design
- Be able to identify how some of these ethics and principles can be applied to your own circumstances
- Be able to identify some of the options available to develop your knowledge of the subject

Some information about the tutor
George is a trainer and facilitator who has been managing and teaching permaculture courses since 1989. He is a founder member of the Permaculture Education Project and is widely recognised as one the UK’s most experienced permaculture teachers.
Who is the course intended for?
It is easily learnt by anyone looking for positive change for themselves, their family and their community with an emphasis on working with nature not against it and in co-operation rather than competition with each other.

Where do we go from here? 
Learners can progress on to the following:
Introduction to Permaculture in Practice – a 30-hour programme
Full Permaculture Design Course – Tools for Sustainability – a 120-hour programme run in a variety of formats. After completing the Full Design course learners can choose to work towards:
The Diploma in Permaculture Design
This is a two-year action learning programme with tutor and peer group support.
